Summer brings heat, longer days, and if you're lucky, a vacation or two. But while you're planning beach trips and out-of-office replies, your terrarium is dealing with intense sun, higher temperatures, and irregular watering schedules.
The good news? Terrariums are designed to be self-sustaining. The better news? A few simple adjustments will keep yours thriving all summer long, even when you're not around.
1. Watch Your Light (Summer Sun Is Intense)
Summer sunlight is no joke. That window spot that worked perfectly in January might be frying your terrarium by April.
What to do: Check your terrarium's location. Is it getting direct afternoon sun? Move it back from the window or add sheer curtains to filter the light. Your terrarium needs bright, indirect light, not a solar assault.
Signs of too much sun: Brown, crispy leaves. Excessive condensation that never clears. Algae taking over.
Quick fix: Relocate to a shadier spot with ambient daylight. Your plants will thank you.
2. Don't Overwater (Even When It's Hot)
It's tempting to think your terrarium needs more water in the summer heat. It doesn't. The sealed environment means moisture stays inside, cycling through evaporation and condensation regardless of outside temperatures.
What to do: Check the condensation on the glass. Light morning fog that clears by afternoon? Perfect. Bone dry for several days? Add a light misting, just a spray or two.
Summer reminder: Over-watering kills more terrariums than under-watering. If you're unsure, wait another day.
3. Keep It Away from Heat Sources
Air conditioning. Electric fans. Direct sun through glass. These create temperature swings that stress your terrarium's ecosystem.
What to do: Find a stable spot, no AC vents blowing directly on it, no windowsills baking in afternoon heat. Consistency matters more than the exact temperature.
Ideal range: Room temperature (20-25°C) with minimal fluctuations.
4. Pre-Vacation Prep (Yes, It Can Survive Without You)
Planning a summer getaway? Your terrarium can absolutely handle it.
Before you leave:
- Check condensation levels. If it's balanced, leave it alone.
- Move it slightly back from windows if you'll be gone during peak summer heat.
- Ask someone to check on it only if you'll be gone for more than three weeks.
Don't: Over-water before leaving "just in case." This causes more problems than it solves.
Remember: Terrariums are designed to thrive with minimal intervention. They've survived longer without you before.
5. Maintenance Check (Quick Summer Refresh)
Summer's a good time for a quick health check.
What to look for:
- Dead or yellowing leaves (remove them)
- Overgrown plants blocking light (trim carefully)
- Algae on glass (wipe gently with a cloth)
Takes 5 minutes, extends your terrarium's life significantly.

Summer doesn't have to be stressful for you or your terrarium. These aren't high-maintenance plants, they're designed to regulate themselves. Your job is simply to create the right environment and then trust the process.
Adjust for summer light. Don't over-water. Keep temperatures stable. That's it.
Your terrarium survived the rest of the year. It'll survive summer too. Enjoy your vacation. Your plants will be fine. 🌿☀️
